Think of your interface with the world as a negotiating process. You want something from the world and the world wants something from you as well.
You can approach it like you would approach negotiating a friend. Or you can approach it like you would approach negotiating an enemy. Either way it would be helpful to know what your friend or enemy is about. The more you know the better. That coupled with how much you know yourself is crucial to your win.
As with any negotiating process, compromises are bound to arise. Just ensure you are at a receiving end of a compromise while negotiating with the world.
